Steel Pipe Suppliers Mention Dissimilarities between Seamless and ERW Stainless Steel Pipe

You must know the differences between seamless and ERW stainless steel pipes if you are in the steel industry or making use of steel pipes and tube for your business and industrial requirements. This article aims to make you familiar about the same.

1. Raw material required for manufacturing Seamless & ERW Stainless steel Pipes:

A solid round ‘billet’ steel is used for the manufacturing of Seamless steel pipe. It is heated and pulled or pushed over a standard mould until a hollow tube is formed. Billets are imported both from domestic & international suppliers. Locals are JSPL, Kalyani etc & international are Europe, Canada etc.

HR coils are required for the manufacturing of the ERW steel pipes. Supplier of these coils include JSW, Lloyds etc. .

2. Difference Between Seamless and ERW Stainless Steel Pipes?

As the name suggest the seamless pipes has got no joints or welding. It is seamless and hence made out of a single piece of steel. It has got a variety of sizes. From 1/8th of an inch to 26 inches OD. Wherever high pressure is required, this pipe comes in to picture. For example, hydrocarbon refineries, oil and gas exploration & drilling, bearings, boilers, automobiles etc.

Rolling the metal & welding the rolled metal sheet longitudinally lengthwise is the manufacturing process for ERW- Electric Resistance Welding. Since it is welded across the length, therefore it has got a joint in its cross section. It is formed through a ribbon of steel which is made to go through a number of rollers and formed in to a tube which is fused through some electric charge. It is used where low/medium pressure is needed. It can be made from 2-2/8 inches up to 24 inches in OD and up to 100 feet long. Generally used for transportation of water. Even different surface finishes are available.

3. Technologies are used to manufacture Seamless & ERW Pipes:

CPE technology is used for manufacturing of both the pipes up to 7 inches OD. Another plug Mill technology is used for manufacturing of Seamless pipes & tubes up to 14 inches. However, High frequency Induction Welding technology is used in the manufacturing of the ERW pipes up to 21 Inches OD.

4. Identification of Seamless or ERW Stainless Steel pipes:

Identification of both the pipes can be done simply by reading whatever is written on the side of the pipe.

If it is ASTM A53,

  • Type S: seamless.
  • Type F: furnace but welded,
  • Type E: Electrical resist welded.
  • In this way it can be identified.

In general it is assumed that the Seamless pipes are flawless because they are built out of a single piece of steel hence without welding so no flaws. And the welded pipes are considered to be flawed due to its manufacturing. Some of these misconceptions lead the buyers to seamless pipes. However, one has to understand that both the pipes has got some or the other kind of flaws. Some consumers might be aware of the problems in general faced by the users of the seamless pipes as well. Choose your pipe wisely keeping aside all the myths that might affect your decision.
